The Worshipful Company of Needlemakers is proud of its affiliation with and support for the Third Battalion, The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, known as the ‘Tigers’.
The Third Battalion is part of the Territorial Army which itself was founded in 1908. The ‘Tigers’ have a distinguished history involving several famous antecedent Regiments such as the Royal Hampshires and the Queen’s Royal Surreys, one of the oldest regiments in the British Army.
Each year at our April meeting The Needlemaker’s Sword is presented to the young officer who, in the opinion of the Commanding Officer, has made the most outstanding contribution in the previous year. The winner comes to a Livery Court Dinner where the Commanding Officer reads a citation and the Sword is presented. Members of the livery are very conscious of the contribution being made at this time by volunteers of the Territorial Army who take their place along side their regular compatriots in the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Livery Company are also long term donors to the Royal British Legion, City of London Poppy Appeal. The Master, along with the masters of the other 108 livery companies of the City of London, places a cross in the annual Field of Remembrance at St Paul’s Cathedral.
