The Master and Wardens welcome applications from anyone of good standing interested in joining the Livery. Men and women enjoy equal status as Liverymen. The first lady Master was installed in October 2011. It is worthwhile repeating here the present day aims of the Livery:
- To provide a link to the industry and its modern offshoots
- To dispense charitable funds to deserving causes
- To maintain links with the City and other livery companies and to support the Lord Mayor
- To create a friendly environment in which likeminded people may socialise
The following steps are involved in the admission process
To join the Livery an aspiring applicant must know at least two individuals who are members of the Livery already and should try to attend some functions to get an idea of how the Livery works, who the senior members are and what is to be expected of him/her. There are four lunches/dinners, and banquet, annually. There are also smaller and less formal events to which guests of Liverymen may be invited.
Should the individual then wish to seek membership he should obtain an application form through his/her sponsor. Once this has been completed by the applicant and the sponsor(s) it should be returned to the Clerk.
The first sponsor and the candidate then attend a meeting of the Membership Committee where they are interviewed. The committee will then make a recommendation to the Court. The Court sits four times a year in October, January, April and July.
Assuming that the Court approves the application the Clerk will then arrange for the candidate to be admitted to the Freedom of the Company. This is a simple ceremony conducted by the Clerk.
Once the Clerk has issued a certificate of Freedom then the candidate makes application to the Court of the City Chamberlain for admission to the Freedom of the City. This requires two visits to the Chamberlain’s Clerk, the first for documentation; the second for the Freedom Ceremony. The latter is an enjoyable ceremony which family and friends are encouraged to attend.
Once a candidate is free of the Company and of the City he/she is eligible to be admitted to the Livery. The Admission (or Clothing) takes place at a full meeting of the Court and immediately precedes the lunch/dinner being held the same day. Family and friends are encouraged to attend this event as guests of the new Liveryman.
- January: attend Court Luncheon. Complete application form.
- February: attend Membership Committee. Attend Banquet and / or
- March: attend smaller Livery event.
- April: Court decides on the candidate’s application. Attend Court Lunch.
- May: admitted to Freedom of the Company. Apply for Freedom of the City (1st visit)
- June: admitted to Freedom of the City (2nd visit).
- July: admitted to the Livery.
The above would be considered a fast-track process. It may well take longer ie until October. The process can start at any time and need not be in January.
There are certain costs or fines that are involved in being admitted to the Company and an annual tallage (subscription). These are lower on a sliding scale for those under 40 and will be fully explained to you by your sponsor and the Clerk.
Liverymen are also expected to contribute to the Company’s charitable funds according to their means by making regular donations
