This column is the Hon Archivist update:
It all happened when Senior PM Derek Foster was the Master in 1986 and he remained the link throughout this story.
Here is the summary:
- It was discovered that the Coat of Arms of the Company had not been granted by the College of Arms. See the article written for the Newsletter in 2019 Page 14: https://ca1-ndm.edcdn.com/newsletters/2019-Needlemakers-Newsletter-FINAL-medium.pdf?mtime=20191008091412
- As a result the Master’s jewel worn until then was seen to be incorrect and needed to come into line with the correct Coat of Arms. Therefore, a new one was commissioned and here is a note from the Court minutes of January 1987:
“The Master produced a drawing prepared in accordance with the confirmed Coat of Arms. It was agreed that it would be appropriate to have a more impressive badge than the present example and it was agreed that the Master should follow this up’.
The new Jewel was presented to the Court in 1987 – click the link below for the Treasure web page to see the Master’s Old Jewel:
In 1988, the Master’s Chain was stolen.
A new chain was commissioned in 1989 by PMs Sir Jasper Hollom and PM Derek Foster involved with the replacement. It was completed and worn with the New Jewel at the annual Banquet in 1990.
This new chain is much more elaborate than the old one and was loaned for an exhibition held at the Goldsmiths Hall in 1992. See the Website link to the Master’s new chain in the Treasure section: https://www.needlemakers.org.uk/members/treasure/the-masters-new-chain-nmp27
